Qatar is Cambodia's new labour market

[Everyday.com]

Cambodia has signed an agreement to provide skilled and unskilled workers to Qatar, a country that have suffered a labour shortfalls for many, many years.

The agreement was struck during a visit by Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, Mr. Vong Soth, to Qatar on 9th May, 2011. During the meeting, Mr. Vong Soth had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Qatari Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr. Nasser Bin Abdullah Al-Hamidi. The MoU states that Qatar had agreed to accept workers from Cambodia legally and providing them with medical insurance and protection under Qatari labour laws.

Under the agreement, Cambodian workers will be paid between $300-$3,000 per month depending on the level of their skills.

Qatar had provided Cambodia with some financial aid and during the visit of Qatari prime minister to Cambodia in 2008, many issues, including oil explorations, were high on the agenda of talks.

Cambodia has so far sent hundreds of thousands of its workers to overseas labour markets, namely South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia and some countries in the Middle East.
