Cambodia’s year-on-year tourism growth has drawn more investment in the hotel sector. The Little Garden, a boutique hotel in Phnom Penh that opened just six months ago, continues to draw a large number of foreign visitors. Phnom Penh Post reporters Sorn Sarath and Siem Bunthy interviewed The Little Garden’s owner, Pisey Pech, who opened the hotel with local partners and investment capital of US$100,000.

Why did you choose to invest in a hotel?
I first began my interest in business when I was travelling around a lot previously, and studied abroad so I could get ideas from other countries. I noticed that in Cambodia, most hotels are foreign-style and are owned by foreigners. Because of this, foreigners living in Cambodia receive all the profit.

Queenco involved in hotel and casino project in Cambodia

Queenco Leisure International, a developer, owner and operator of casinos and resorts, has signed a joint venture agreement in Cambodia.

It will involve a local partner and has been formed for the carrying out of hotel, casino, as well as other associated businesses at the Holiday Palace Hotel in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

The first stage of the project, which is comprised of the opening of a casino with 130 gaming machines as well as a 60 room hotel which is adjacent to the existing hotel, will begin within a month.

The second stage will be to renovate, improve and extend the existing hotel and open another casino.

Queenco will hold indirectly, through subsidiaries, 70% of the venture.

Visitors fill hotels in Sihanoukville

Year-end travelers have fully booked Sihanoukville province’s hotels and guesthouses for the first-ever Sea Festival, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors this year, tourism officials said.

Tith Chantha, general director at the Ministry of Tourism, confirmed that all hotel and guesthouse rooms were booked for New Year’s, adding that the Cambodian coast became more popular since joining the Most Beautiful Bays of the World Club in May.

Kuy Sengteang, a receptionist at the Holiday Palace Hotel in the province, said that the hotel’s 81 rooms had been fully booked for about three weeks.

“This year, many [people] called to book the rooms, but our hotel doesn’t have available rooms,” she said.

The Makara and Orchidee Guest Houses in Sihanoukville also reported full capacity from December 24 until January 4.

Luxury hotel ‘breaking law’

The Angkor Village Hotel and Resort is breaking the law by refusing to reinstate 67 sacked workers that the Arbitration Council ruled were unlawfully dismissed, Siem Reap’s deputy governor claimed yesterday.

After attending a protest of hotel workers and supporters outside the hotel in Siem Reap town yesterday, Kim Chhay Heang said company owner Tep Vantho had simply ignored orders from his office to abide by an Arbitration Council decision and Cambodian law.

Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh and Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap, are currently undergoing a refurbishment.

Soluxe sees room for growth in hotel management deals

BEIJING - Soluxe Hospitality Group, a Beijing-based international hotel operator, is seeking to export its management expertise.

Its first such arrangement began on Aug 1 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, where it put the Angkor Palace Resort & Spa under its Grand Soluxe brand and assumed management of the hotel.

"We hope that through our partnership with the Soluxe Hospitality Group, we can help this country attract more well-heeled Chinese tourists to visit our magnificent Angkor temples," said Ly Hong, a Chinese-Cambodian and owner of the renamed Grand Soluxe Angkor Palace Resort & Spa.

Siem Reap is the gateway to the Angkor Wat complex, which features centuries of remains of the Khmer Empire.

Soluxe Hospitality Group has already established a presence in the emerging economies of Africa, South America and Europe. The group is now seeking to make inroads into countries such as Germany, Italy, France and Spain, according to Tim Gao, general manager of China National Petroleum Corp International Hotel Management Co Ltd, the parent of Soluxe.

Siem Reap hotel sacks more workers

Labour department officials have taken action against Siem Reap province’s Angkor Village Hotel and Resort after the luxury  hotel sacked more than two thirds of its workforce over the past week, including 48 people on Saturday.

The provincial labour department yesterday filed a complaint to the Arbitration Council against the hotel, which has reportedly sacked 66 of its 90 employees, dismissals which came after the workers formed a union early last month.

The hotel’s owners told provincial labour officials in a meeting last Wednesday that they planned to rehire the employees. However, as of yesterday, they were reportedly refusing to reinstate the workers.

“The owners informed me that they would not rehire the employees that they fired from their hotel. However, they did agree to pay compensation in accordance with the labour law to the 66 employees that were fired,” labour department chief Chan Sokhom Cheta said yesterday.

He added that his department had filed the complaint to the Arbitration Council.

New head at hotel: Fresh boss for Sofitel

THE capital’s Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra hotel announced on Friday the appointment of a new general manager.

French national Charles-Henri Chevet will fill the role following the relocation of previous general manager Didier Lamoot to Sofitel’s property at Bora Bora, in Tahiti.

Chevet has previously worked at the Siem Reap-based Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf and Spa Resort.

“Siem Reap is the great proving ground in Cambodia,” he said in a press release.

The 201-room hotel currently holds a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site.

EEG secures Cambodian hotel deal

Energy Efficiency Group (EEG), the sister company of Maintenance Management Group (MMG) has won a contract with Kingdom Hotels Investment (KHI) to perform energy audits on two landmark hotels in Cambodia.

Currently hotels, Raffles Le Royal Phnom Penh and Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angor, have an energy cost in excess of $2m.

EEG is required to provide a comprehensive understanding of energy costs; provide a detailed analysis of all energy balances within both hotels, identify all of the potential energy efficiency measures in order to provide the hotel management with a full picture of what could be achieved and advise on where KHI should invest based on engineering and cost analysis.

“EEG was delighted to be appointed by Kingdom Hotels for this task,” said Ronald Diabb, Managing Director EEG.

“Having audited all aspects of energy usage, we have identified more than 25% savings in both hotels - given the very high cost of electricity in Cambodia. This represents significant financial savings and so a high return on investment."

The initial assessment suggests that the expected energy cost reductions would be in excess of 15% annually.
EEG is an ESCO (Energy Services Company) that takes energy efficiency projects from the energy audit to the project implementation and savings verifications.
