Silk, a potential industrial sector for Cambodia

[AKP]

Cambodia’s silk industry has been considered as one of the main potential sectors for the poverty reduction and the country development, Secretary of State at the Commerce Ministry H.E. Pan Sorasak said on Wednesday at a workshop held at the ministry.

H.E. Pan Sorasak said with this potential, a Silk Board will be established soon to boost the country’s silk industry.

“We expect to launch the Silk Board at the end of this year or early next year,” he said.

The upcoming Silk Board is aimed to monitor and help Cambodian silk producers from the beginning to the final product, from mulberry tree growing to weaving, designing and selling, he said.

Ms. Onie Luna, Director of Owigee EcocraftNet Cambodia said the silk industry is estimated to contribute annually around US$25 million to the country’s GDP.

It is also a major source of income to over 25,000 people, most of them are women, she said.
