Cambodia exports 2.34 bln USD garment in 8 months

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia has exported garments and textiles in equivalent to 2.34 billion U.S. dollars in the first eight months of this year, according to the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.

From January to August this year, the exports to the United States was 1.28 billion U.S. dollars, to European countries was 566 million U.S. dollars, to Canada 243 million U.S. dollars and to other countries 247 million U.S. dollars, showed reports released here during the annual Better Factories Cambodia Buyers' Forum, which was attended by 39 buyers from across the globe.

Besides garment and textile exports, the country has also exported foot-wears in equivalent to 158 million U.S. dollars mainly to European countries, U.S., Canada and Japan.

Cham Prasidh, Minister of Commerce, attributed the growth to good labor conditions and improved quality of products in combination with the global economic recovery.

The reports said that by August this year, the country has 291 garment and textile factories with 324,800 workers, and 39 foot- wear factories with 63,600 employees.

Garment industry represents more than 90 percent of Cambodia's total exports.
