[PHNOM PENH POST]
A pig stands upright against the wall of its pen during feeding time on a
farm in Banteay Meanchey province earlier this year. Farmers say they
are returning to pig farming as pork prices soar. Choem Vuthy, acting
director of the Kampong Cham province Agriculture Development Community
League, said yesterday area farmers are receiving over 20,000 riel for
one kilogramme of pork meat, from 16,000 riel for the same amount last
year. “The growth of pork prices is great for pig farmers but it is
problematic for those with lower incomes – for them, pork prices are too
high,” he said. Ministry of Commerce statisitcs show the price of pork
has increased by some 35 percent on Phnom Penh markets this year,
selling near 22,000 riel per kilogramme late last week.
